Southern Charm: A Review of DC’s Hotel Indigo


Cradled between the charming cobblestone streets of Old Town Alexandria, Va. and the busy shorelines of the Potomac sits a quaint yet centrally located seaside oasis.

What has become a destination for travelers both near and far, the Hotel Indigo Alexandria perfectly reflects the historic culture and character of the surrounding neighborhoods – and even the ground on which it stands.


Opened to the public in the spring of 2017, the newly erected Hotel Indigo at 220 South Union Street in Alexandria has quite the backstory. During the initial construction phase, crews unearthed the remains of a 50-ft vessel that archaeologists claimed was abandoned in the late 18th century. Once uncovered, the remains came to serve as a primary player in Old Town’s waterfront revitalization project.

Featuring an innovative business center, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and their signature restaurant, Hummingbird, Hotel Indigo boasts a number of rooms that keep a pulse on the nonstop action of the Old Town waterfront so guests never skip a beat.

Guests can book a King, Double Queen, or Corner Guest Rooms for reasonable prices that won’t break the bank but are indicative of the first-class customer service and hospitality guests experience during their stay.

For our staycation, we were placed in a timeless Corner Guest Room that provided a direct view of the river on the backside, and a birds-eye-view of iconic King Street to our left. The room decor featured a mixture of elegant southern charm and refreshing nautical accents, with crisp plush bedding, solid oak accents, and hints of blueish green scattered throughout.

The bathroom was spacious, polished, and full of natural light from floor to ceiling including a full glass-encased shower, granite sinks, and intricately placed tiles throughout.|

To enhance our experience, the hotel staff placed an array of specialty goods from local Alexandria bakeries, wineries, and gift shops on the corner desk including a bottle of champagne on ice, two mini bottles of patron, cosmopolitan mix, and a hand-written note – a touch of detailed perfection.

It was almost time to make our dinner reservation at the downstairs Hummingbird restaurant, so we plugged in our electronics (there were no shortage of electrical outlets in the hotel either, which is a bonus for any professional staying there on work duty), and utilized the luxury complimentary bath products during each of our high-pressured showers.

We made our way down to the first floor via the elevator and walked down the long corridor adjacent to the hotel’s outdoor courtyard. At the end of the corridor, we arrived at the entrance of the Hummingbird. Like we said – convenience.

The friendly hostess immediately led us to our table that was situated next to a window overlooking the river, while the glow of lit table side candles gave the restaurant a warm and welcoming feel. The dining room was refreshingly clean with modern design paired with the perfect amount of ocean inspired decor.

The menu boasts signature dishes that makes it a seafood lovers dream come true. Chef Cathal Armstrong stays true to American tradition of clambakes, crab boils, fish fries, and oyster roasts- but we’ll get to the food later.

As usual, we started off the night with a few rounds of adult beverages. The “Slushy Style Comso” was an obvious first for its innovative concept and barbie pink hue. No matter the season, this cocktail is a must-try.

We were then surprised by the wait staff with a glass of bubbly to cleanse our pallets before ordering our first course.

For our first course, we were served the “Grilled Octopus with Chimichurri” with halved mixed baby tomatoes, castelvetrano olives, capers, and drizzled evoo. The presentation was stunning but the flavors were even more inspiring.

Before long, we were gazing at a table full of plates that showcased some of Hummingbird’s most popular appetizers including their spin on the traditional ham & cheese (made with gruyère and shaved Virginia ham on brioche bread):
