We are sorry we have been on a food porn hiatus the last couple weeks, but we have been recovering from an extreme sugar coma after visiting our latest featured donut extraordinaire!
(In all honestly, we have been traveling abroad and domestically since early March, so please bare with us as we have a lot of catching up to do!) Now back to these donuts we mention above…
As you can tell by our previous blog posts, our love for donuts is no secret. Judge us all you want – we “do-nut” care what you think! (Just had to throw that in there, heh).
Seriously, though. How could we *not*? Living on the East Coast certainly has its perks, and having 24-hour access to some of the country’s top-tier sugar bread-bombs is one of them. So, without further adieu, let us introduce you to our newest partner-in-crime: Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken!
Located in the heart of downtown D.C., Astro is the brainchild of former Washington Capitol and current New York Ranger Jeff Halpern and his childhood friend Elliot Spaisman. Since 2013, Astro’s has served up some of the most unique and sought after fried halos in the D.C. metro area. (And we can’t fail to mention they also serve up freshly-fried chicken). You read that correctly: fried. chicken.
We will explain the chicken business later on, but trust us when we say we need to stay focused on the donuts (just for now)!
Whatever Astro lacks in the size of its cozy roadside shop, it more than makes up for in both flavor and presentation. In fact, on any given day, one can find locals and tourists alike lining the G-Street sidewalk anxiously waiting to get their hands and tastebuds on the warm, gooey goodness that awaits them behind the double doors.
Most days, Astro offers up to eight different flavors for patrons to choose from (some are always on the menu, and others are seasonal). These aren’t your run-of-the-mill Dunkin’ Donut style breakfast pastries, either. Each Astro donut is made in-house using local ingredients. The flavors include but are not limited to:
Creme brûlée (voted by Washingtonians as D.C.’s best donut):
Donuts this beautiful deserve a close up:
In honor of spring and the much anticipated Cherry Blossom Festival, Astro brilliantly crafted the “Cherry Blossom donut” that consisted of a vanilla donut base pumped full of cherry pie filling, and coated with cream cheese glaze and buttercream frosting flowers (pictured below).
To ensure they have your desired flavor on hand, we recommend calling ahead or visiting the website before making the journey.
Now, if donuts aren’t really your thing (we think you are crazy, but to each their own), we can happily explain where the fried chicken enters the picture. Just a warning – this may blow your mind!
Fried. Chicken. Donut. Sandwiches.
This savory yet slightly sweet combo boasts a giant, fried-to-perfection boneless chicken breast that is placed between two slices of glazed donut and smeared with your choice of whipped honey butter or buffalo sauce (we opted for honey butter). If you *insist* on keeping donuts out of the equation altogether, Astro can do that, too. They also serve up wings, chicken fingers and fried chicken breasts daily.
If you’re looking for a fun and affordable alternative to cake for your next celebration, Astro can help you out there, too! In addition to its amazing food truck that can deliver orders directly to your event, their mini-sized fried chicken sandwiches or donut tree/buffets should do the trick. For more information or to place an order call 202-809-5565 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
So what’ll it be? A more traditional yet satisfying endeavor, or a walk on the wild side? We will ultimately let you decide, but one thing is for certain: run – don’t walk – to Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken now! Your tummy and tastebuds will love you for it.
